Why You Should Never Trust Spell-Check Alone
Spell-check misses context-based errors. Here’s what you need to add to your process.
Spell-check is great for catching “teh” instead of “the.” But it won’t catch “their” used where “there” belongs. It won’t flag “your” when you meant “you’re.” These are homophone errors, and they’re the most common mistake I see in professional writing.
I once edited a 50-page report that had “principle” instead of “principal” on every page. Spell-check didn’t blink. The writer was embarrassed, but the client was forgiving — barely. That could have been a lost relationship.
The fix is to run a separate check for homophones. Use Find and search for “their/they’re/there,” “your/you’re,” “its/it’s,” “affect/effect,” and “principal/principle.” Read each instance in context. It takes five minutes.
Our proofreading template includes a homophone checklist. It’s a simple table with the most common pairs. Use it once, and you’ll never miss one again. Spell-check is a tool, not a solution. The brain is still the best editor — if you give it the right prompts.
